Rain can be an inconvenience and even a severe hardship when enough of it falls. But it is also a blessing. The rain that falls from heaven is essential for life to exist on earth. It provides life-giving refreshment to those who are thirsty and waters the crops that provide food for every living being. It is this blessed work of rain that Isaiah references when he prophecies: “Just as the rain and snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without watering the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, yielding seed for the sower and bread for eating, so will my message be that goes out of my mouth—it won’t return to me empty. Instead, it will accomplish what I desire, and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
God’s Word is a blessed rain shower. It provides the life-giving nourishment of forgiveness and peace to souls that are thirsting for salvation. It yields the Bread of Life that strengthens and sustains weary hearts. Think of every time you read the Word of God or speak it to someone else as a drop of rain falling from heaven. The question I have is this: Is it raining in your life? Is it raining at your house? Is it raining in your neighborhood? Is it just a sprinkle or is it a torrential downpour? When it comes to the rain of the Gospel, you can never have too much. You need a constant shower of the Spirit. Your family needs it. Your community needs it. So while we pray that the rain which is currently falling outside our windows might stop soon, let’s pray that the rain of God’s Word would keep pouring around us.
