It’s Time for Purple (2/12/16)

February 12, 2016 in Church News

This Sunday, we enter into the Lenten season of the Church Year. As the season turns to Lent, the color of our sanctuary turns to purple. In the ancient world, purple was the color of royalty. It was worn by kings and noblemen. It was a sign of wealth and prestige.

In Lent, we celebrate our King–Jesus Christ. But he was not a king who wore purple. He did not live a life of luxury as other kings did. The only time he wore purple was the time it was draped over his shoulders as the soldiers mocked him and spit upon him before taking him to the cross.

For this reason, we see purple as a color of repentance. It reminds us of how our sins are a mockery of our Lord. It reminds us how he wore the robe of shame that we deserve. He did this so that in its place we could receive a robe of righteousness. What a wonderful Savior!

Let’s take the opportunity that the Lenten season provides to worship our Savior–to approach him with humility and repentance and to praise him with grateful hearts.

In Christ,
Pastor Steve
